Weekend in Edinburgh
Until recently, I have never ventured north to Scotland. It has remained a constant area of intrigue from the accents, the food, the history and obviously the landscapes.
Since we were recently gifted a long weekend, and thus headed to Edinburgh. We decided to drive since we knew we wouldn’t stick to just Edinburgh the whole weekend and wanted a car to get around. Do note, the flights and trains from London are much quicker options.
Edinburgh is jam packed with culture, arts, food, architecture and beauty, there is something for everyone. This is what I was able to fit into 2.5 days!
Here are my top suggestions:
Cairngorms National Park – ok so not exactly in Edinburgh, but always need a dose of nature from the surrounding area. Cairngorms is nothing short of picturesque. After driving on a narrow, one lane road for most of the journey, seeing the landscape open up to rolling greens was breath taking. Honestly, some of the most gorgeous untouched slice of the world that everyone needs to see. This area is truly what I picture when I think of the landscapes of Scotland.
Balmoral castle is in this area, so if that interests you stop in. But just having the day to roam in the fresh air was lovely. Stopped off in a small town called Braemar for lunch, which either we were starving, or it was an amazing burger.
Old town – a must do, which includes the Royal Mile, one of the most iconic streets in Edinburgh, Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle. This area, though maybe a bit touristy, has some of the most gorgeous architecture in Edinburgh and definitely worth strolling down.
Calton hill – Not so much a hike, but rather a little walk up the giant hill. This hill provides you with amazing views of Edinburgh, old town, the castle and so on. Time this perfectly with sunset and you will have a great view of the sun going down over the city. Also, a great spot to put down a picnic blanket and take in the scene, as it seems that’s what a lot of other had in mind!
Holyrood park – for me a nice little morning hike is always what the doctor ordered. This is not a super challenging walk/ hike, if you do this sort of thing, and it gives you great views of Edinburgh. Make sure you make it to ‘Arthurs Seat’ which is the top, and has the best views.
Any suggestions on what else we should not miss out on in Edinburgh?
Let me know! Xx
