Weekend in Rome

I think I might truly be my happiest in Italy, but what is not to love about pasta, pizza and house wine? Mix in the beauty of Rome, and you have a very happy girl.  This was not my first time in Rome, but it was the shortest trip I have taken there, only three days to take it all in.  I don’t feel like there will ever be enough time to explore Italy, but if all you have is a weekend, here is how to take advantage of that!

 TO SEE

Rome is FILLED to the brim with beauty churches buildings, statues and ruins, that one could get lost in the mix of it all.  To be honest, you cannot go wrong in Rome, as half of the beauty is just in ROME-ing the streets.  But truly, besides the big-name places, wander into churches that have their doors open, you will likely find hidden treasures.

The Vatican/ St. Peter’s Basilica - The sheer size of the Vatican is something that you must see.  Entry is free, you just need to wait in a line and go through a security check point, but trust me totally worth it!

Colosseum, Roman Forum - Plan this in advance, as tickets can be sold out for a while, and if you want to go into the bottom level you will definitely need to book this in advance.  If you buy a ticket to the Colosseum through the website it includes entry into the Roman Forum.  Checking out ancient Rome is simply mind blowing when you consider the history and age of everything around you.

Sistine Chapel When you see something depicted in photos and films your whole life, seeing it in person is almost unbelievable, but it was one of those pinch me moments for me.

Trevi Fountain – It would be almost impossible to go through Rome and not somehow walk past the fountain, but make sure you do.  Another place that I had imagined seeing my whole life.  Word to the wise, if you get here early in the day, you might be able to have some unobstructed views.  If not, you will just be mixed in with tons of tourist, but at this point, very much part of the experience.

TO STAY

I am still working on finding my perfect hotel in Rome, but in terms of a neighborhood, I personally love Trastevere.  Especially for a weekend, this area will be less touristy than right across the river, plus you can find amazing restaurants, café’s and gelato just a stone’s throw from your door.  Completely walkable to any tourist sites as well! It is worth pointing out that the area is not well connected to the main train station, but I think that’s a pretty common theme in Rome.

TO EAT
This most recent trip was a heavy focus on pizza, much more so than the last time…

Dar Poeta easy, good pizza on a nice quiet street! Probably one of my favorite spots to go, but that might also be the company and the memories, every trip to Rome I make a stop here!

Antico Forno Roscioli- expect a line, expect GREAT pizza.  Lots of other baked good options here, try everything!

Ivo a Trasevere Again, pizza, pasta, house wine, go for it.

Donkey Punch Great spot for grabbing an amazing sandwich (if you are over the pizza)

Make sure you eat lots of gelato, walk down every arbitrary street and soak in ‘la dolce vita.’
