How to Pack for Safari
Packing to go to Kruger was challenging for me, as I really had no idea what to expect, and movies and Instagram make you feel like everyone is in full blown khaki suit (thank you Hollywood). I am here to tell you, this is not the case and not everyone will be looking like the Queen on her trip to Kenya.
When it comes to clothes, keep these things and mind. Nights and early morning can be QUITE chilly no matter the time of year. Apart from those times, the time of year will heavily impact what clothes you require. If it is winter, bring layers, they are your friend. If it is during warmer months, I would focus on materials and colors. The African sun is strong, learn from me, as someone who got burnt through a car window! Linens and loose-fitting cottons would be my suggestion. Avoid black at all costs, seriously. As much as you want to get ‘safari’ clothes, the truth is you will be spending majority of your day sitting in a car, and therefore I would choose what you will feel comfortable in. I would also make sure you have clothes that can cover your legs and arms, and a hat for your face, especially if you are extra prone to burning. Also, footwear – keep in mind when you do get out of the car, its sandy and dirty, skip the white sneakers!
Now for everything apart from clothes. I am not going to tell you to bring your whole routine on not, because look if that’s what makes you feel good, go for it! Personally, I didn’t put on makeup once, but definitely kept up with the basics in my own routine, eye cream, face cream, retinol etc. I would NOT skip on is the bug spray and sun screen, as without both of those things could make your trip uncomfortable.
For me, I would be saving most of the room in my luggage for the best camera/ lens I own. Your iPhone is NOT going to get a great shot of a lion that is 300 feet away laying down in the grass. If you do have an awesome long lens, now is your time to shine. If you don’t, there are still some awesome affordable cameras out there, and personally I would be bringing something, since when you get home you will want to have more than the memories. Lastly, I would back car chargers or portable battery packs for phones and cameras since there can be long stretches in the car!
Let me know if you carry anything else along with you!
