Galway

Often a popular destination for tourists, Galway is one of Ireland’s most loved cities.  But why do so many people find this place so charming? Here are all of my reasons why Galway needs to be on your Ireland bucket list.

Galway has all the charm of Ireland, that one would expect, whilst also having the feel of a very small city.  With the presence of a university, pubs and restaurants are always lively.  Everything feels very cozy and friendly.  Walking around Galway you can easily see most of the city quickly, so best to be opening to roaming around.  Two areas I did not want to miss were the Salthill Prom, as well as the Latin Quarter. Pop into Thomas Dillon the home of the original Claddagh Ring. Cute, little Irish shop, selling all sorts of jewelry.  The people in there are very friendly, and gave us a bit of a history of the shop.

Galway is also conveniently located right along the west coast and therefore gives you access to so many gorgeous spots, such as the Cliffs of Moher or a day trip to the Aran Islands.  The Aran islands are quite unique but gorgeous nonetheless.  On Inishmore you can find really epic cliffs, cute shops and homes dotted throughout the island.   Get one of the people in taxi’s waiting by the ferry to drive you around.  This was a suggestion from the couple at the bed and breakfast.  We were given a tour by an island local, who was super friendly and definitely made the experience really nice.  Definitely make a day of it, but make sure to plan a bit for the islands, as you are at the mercy of the ferry schedule.

When back in Galway, check out spots like the Kings Head for a great time and some fun live music. If you are looking for a warm meal Sonny Molly’s is a great spot for some food and a pint.  Both are great for big groups or if you are traveling in a small pack. I would also think about trying Tig Coili a very small ‘pub’ type spot.  Not a place filled with tourists, and this spot did the trick! Don’t order a Guinness, instead opt for a snakebite, I got hooked! Lastly, try ‘The Quay’s Bar and Restaurant’ another place for some late-night fun and live music!

Lastly, when looking for a place to stay, my best advice would be a really cozy bed and breakfast.  The Irish know how to be really hospitable and friendly, so you are sure to have a really lovely experience. The Asgard House was mazing, and I personally loved the couple who hosted us.  Besides the amazing food, they helped us with booking tours and getting directions to places, it was great!

I cannot wait for my trip back to Galway, hoping to go with my whole family on the next round.  Have you been to Galway yet?
