Belfast

Belfast and Northern Ireland in general have been on my mind since moving to London a few years ago.  With such a short flight from London, this trip needed to happen.  After years of seeing pictures of the nature surrounding the city, as well of hearing people talk about how much they loved their visits, I finally took the plunge.

The country of Northern Ireland is so beautiful, just let the landscape speak for itself.  I can’t say that any of it was exactly what I expected, especially the city.  I think that I assumed Belfast was going to be a bit quainter, but it was actually much more of a city than I had imagined.

 TO SEE

There are loads of attractions to explore in Belfast, ranging from city life to immersing yourself in nature. If you intend to do a mix of these things, you have the option of taking day tours or, if you prefer, renting a car.

Renting a car gave us the freedom to choose how long we wanted to stay at each place, plus explore a bit more off the beaten path.  Giants Causeway and its surroundings are a decent drive from the city center of Belfast, approximately an hour away depending on traffic and exact location.

Giants Causeway | Really gorgeous natural wonder, that you must see for yourself.

Causeway Coastal Route | If you do rent a car, this is a gorgeous road for a nice long drive, had me dreaming about coming back for a chilled out weekend.

Dark Hedges |  Game of thrones filming location, plus just some pretty cool trees

Belfast City Hall  |

Grand Opera House |

Titanic Museum | Museum to check out the inception and history of the Titanic

Cathedral Quarter | A charming neighborhood brimming with cozy pubs and delightful restaurants, making it a fun place to hang out.

Carrick-a-rede rope bridge | Depending on the weather when you are going over this bridge, it might be a bit intimidating, but fun nonetheless

 TO EAT & DRINK

Belfast had some great spots.  I just would point out, maybe book ahead and be aware of time.  We kept running into the problem of no reservation or the kitchen was closed/ closing.  Eating out by Giants Causeway was lovely.  There were some great spots including The Causeway Hotel, for a cozy post excursion meal.  I would also head to Ballycastle, a cute coastal town with plenty of options, including some great seafood and an adorable seaside. Back in Belfast, don’t miss The Crown Liquor Saloon and Whites Tavern.  The Crown is truly remarkable. Dating back to the 1800s, it retains its Victorian charm with gas lighting and unique booths that you can book for a private experience. Need to see it for yourself, even if you can’t get a reservation, stop in for a pint! White Tavern is super intimate, often having some sort of live music, its lively and fun, be ready for a good time.

 TO KEEP IN MIND

As stated, I did end up renting a car, knowing we wanted to head out of the city a bunch of times.  I will say, parking was not ideal within Belfast.  When we were doing city things, we always ended up leaving the car where we were staying and walking from there.  Because I was only here for an extended weekend, we didn’t end up using public transport at all.  But then again, we stayed pretty central.

What was the best part of Belfast for you? Did I miss anything?
