Cornwall
Tucked away in the South of England is the beautiful seaside region, Cornwall. After seeing the film ‘About Time,’ I have always fantasized about taking a trip to this gorgeous area, hoping for some wholesome British coastal living. Just shy of a five-hour road trip from London, this makes the perfect long weekend getaway or beach escape, pending the weather. Though even in summer you will not be able to count on the sunshine, you can count on a smattering of fresh local seafood, pasties, fresh air, boutiques and shops locally run, art and peace, be warned that arriving a summer weekend you will not be the only one with this idea.
There are tons of areas of Cornwall worth visiting, some more tourist inundated than others, so choose wisely. Two of my favorites were St. Ives and St. Mawes. St. Ives is one of the more popular destinations, offering a plethora of restaurants, shops and activities. Can get quite active on a busy weekend, parking might be sparse, plan wisely. St. Mawes is on the other side of Cornwall, definitely a bit quieter, but gorgeous with all of the charm. This really lends itself to a much more peaceful visit. I was amazed by the high grass lined roads, that cars would whip through, and equally impressed with the ‘maze’ streets of St. Ives. Different to the kind of ‘beach towns’ I grew up with, with rolling hill and the most picturesque bungalows. Everything is quite laid back, so enjoy the casualty of it all!
SEE
Generally, my advice for this area is to just explore a bit, pop into shops and enjoy the coast!
Wharf Road, St. Ives
Porthgwidden Beach, St. Ives
Summers Beach, St. Mawes
I plan to make this more of a yearly trip, as there are so many more areas I am keen to discover. Where shall I head next time?
